<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> HISTORY OF st. JOHNS’ AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]-->

The St. John Ambulance Association has a very rich and interesting history. It stretches all the way to the 7th century in around 600BC. A guy by the name Abbott Probus set up a sort of inn which was burnt down in the Christian-Muslim fracas of those early times.

The order of the hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, which you know today simply as the order of St. John was actually established in 1099 AD by A Benedictine monk, Blessed Gerard after the Christian forces recaptured Jerusalem. It was not easy, back then, to ensure the safety of the pilgrims as it was quite a lawless society. So the successor of Blessed Gerald, a knight by name Raymond Du Pug added a military role to the duties of hospitallers (equivalent to

modern doctors). This explains why the currently the order of St. John is a paramilitary organization.

The hospitallers had anything but an easy ride, often having to move from place to place. In some places they were attacked but in others like Malta, they were home. From Malta, the order took up the cross that adorns our black flag, the Maltese cross. The black flag itself was chosen from Amalfi, a small republic south of Italy, in gratitude for having purchased land for a group of Benedictine monks. The knights of St. John in Malta stayed there for 200 years before Napoleon Bonaparte expelled them. That was no end though, otherwise you would not be reading this now. The order found its way to Britain and that became its home. Its headquarters became and still is the Gate House at Clerkenwell.
