CS FIRST CLUBS IN KENYA

Dear Principal,

RE: CS FIRST CLUBS IN KENYA

Computer Science First: An Overview

CS First (cs-first.com) is a Google program created by educators and computer scientists that introduces coding and
computer science to students in a collaborative and creative club environment. CS First club members build projects
in Scratch (scratch.mit.edu), a blocks-based programming language. Globally, more than 2,000,000 learners have
experienced CS First.

About Computer Science Education Week

Computer Science Education Week is an annual call to action to inspire children to learn computer science, advocate
for equity, and celebrate the contributions of students, teachers, and partners to the field. This year, both #CSEdWeek
and the Hour of Code activities will align with the theme #CSEverywhere. This theme highlights the impact that
computer science is making everywhere and the relationship that computer science has to different subjects, industries,
career paths, and our everyday lives.
For Computer Science Education Week 2021 (December 2021), Google has partnered with Eveminet
Communications Solutions to run the online workshops.

The Program Goals

1. Increase confidence when using computers
2. Instill courage to try new things
3. Grow perseverance when tackling difficult problems
4. Provide a sense of belonging in technology for underrepresented students, especially girls and
children and youth living with disabilities
5. Demonstrate the impact that CS has in careers and communities

Schools / Club Venue provide

Vendor Project Purpose

To successfully establish CS First clubs across Kenyan, Nigerian and South African schools/organisations and prepare
IT teachers to continue to run CS First as co-curricular or extracurricular activities for their learners.

Duration and Execution of the Project
The project will run from 6 to 19 December 2021, with trainers conducting one (1) CS First workshop (lesson) during
the project. Each workshop (lesson) should be a minimum of one-hour in duration. This will be online via Zoom.
                           PRIVACY DISCLAIMER:
The data collected in the proposal submitted by vendors will be used solely
for the purpose of assessing suitability for and communicating about the
Google CS First CSEdWeek workshops programme by the Cape Town
                       Science Centre.
Pictorial Evidence
Photographs and videos showing training sessions and a cross section of participants will be taken. They will include
participants during active classroom engagements, group photos after class and trainers in action. All children and
assisting teachers must at all times wear their masks. For the online workshops, screenshots of the Google Meet
Room will be taken. These pictures may be used by Google in reports, on social media and elsewhere. When the
consent will not have been sought for the individual/s being photographed or their consenting adult, pictures will be
taken from behind (not showing faces).

Success Stories
We shall request at least TWO quality success stories from volunteers, which clearly demonstrate the positive impact
that the training is having on the learners. Success stories will be accompanied by relevant photographs with relevant
permissions.

Important COVID 19 Guidelines
We request that COVID-19 safety signage should be in place throughout the venue. The children and trainers must
at all times wear a mask during the training. Please also ensure there is enough fresh air and good air circulation in
the venues being used for training.
